PlateRep has no accounts and no user database. Your meals, workouts, water and weight are stored in files on your iPhone. The one thing that leaves your device is a meal photo you choose to scan, and only for as long as it takes to estimate what is on the plate.
Who we are
PlateRep is developed and published by Davut Temel (Destek Bilişim), Istanbul, Türkiye. Questions about this policy can go to info@destekbilisim.net.
What we never collect
- No name, email address, phone number or password — the app has no sign-up.
- No advertising identifiers. PlateRep contains no ad networks.
- No analytics or tracking SDKs of any kind.
- No contacts, location, microphone or calendar access.
What stays on your iPhone
Everything you log is written to ordinary files inside the app's private storage area. It is not uploaded, synced or backed up to us:
- Your profile: goal, sex, age, height, weight, activity level, units.
- Meals and the foods inside them, with calories and macros.
- Water entries, weight entries, workouts, sets and reps.
- Custom exercises and reminder settings.
If you back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer, this data is included in that backup, under Apple's terms rather than ours. Deleting the app removes the files from your device.
Meal photo scanning
This is the only feature that transmits anything off your device, and it only runs when you take or choose a photo and ask for an estimate.
When you scan a meal, the photo is resized on your iPhone and sent over an encrypted connection to our processing endpoint, along with the language the app is displaying, so results come back in your language. The endpoint forwards the photo to OpenAI for analysis. The estimated foods and nutrition come back to your phone, and the photo is discarded. We do not store the image, and we do not keep the results on any server. OpenAI processes the image to return a result; under its API terms, content sent through the API is not used to train its models.
The photo is only written to your device's storage if you switch on Keep this photo on the result screen. That setting is off by default. If a saved photo is attached to a meal, deleting the meal deletes the photo with it.
Barcode scanning
When you scan a packaged product, the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts, a free and open food database, which returns the product name and its nutrition values. Only the barcode is sent — nothing about you, your meals or your device's contents travels with it. As with any web request, Open Food Facts sees the IP address the request came from. We keep no record of what you scanned.
Technical data used to prevent abuse
Our scanning endpoint runs on Cloudflare Workers. To stop the service being drained by automated abuse, it counts how many scans arrive from a given IP address in a day. That counter is keyed to the IP address and is automatically deleted after 48 hours. It is never linked to your meals, your health data or any identity, because the app does not send us one.
Apple Health
Connecting Apple Health is optional and the app works fully without it. If you allow it, PlateRep reads your step count and active energy to show them on the home screen, and writes the body weight and water entries you log so they appear in Health. All of this happens on your device through Apple's HealthKit framework. Health data is never sent to us or to any third party, and it is never used for advertising. You can withdraw access at any time in the Health app under Sharing.
Subscriptions
PlateRep Premium is sold through Apple's In-App Purchase system. Apple handles the payment and tells the app only whether a valid subscription is active. We never see your card details, billing address or Apple Account.
Notifications
Water, meal and workout reminders are scheduled locally by iOS on your device. They are off until you turn them on, and no reminder passes through a server.
At a glance
| Meals, workouts, water, weight | Stored on your iPhone only |
|---|---|
| Meal photo you scan | Sent for analysis, then discarded; saved on device only if you choose |
| Barcode you scan | Sent to Open Food Facts to look the product up; not recorded by us |
| IP address | Used to limit abuse of the scanning endpoint, deleted after 48 hours |
| Apple Health data | Stays on your device, optional, revocable |
| Payment details | Handled by Apple, never seen by us |
Your choices
- Delete everything: Profile → Delete all data removes every meal, workout, water and weight entry from the device.
- Stop scanning: don't use Scan Meal or Scan Barcode — those are the only two features that send anything off the device. Everything else works offline.
- Revoke Health access: Health app → Sharing → Apps → PlateRep.
- Turn off reminders: Profile → Reminders, or iOS Settings.
Because we hold no account and no copy of your data, there is nothing for us to export or erase on request — uninstalling the app is complete deletion. If you are in a region with statutory data rights and believe we hold something about you, write to us and we will answer.
Children
PlateRep is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects how data is handled, we will update this page and change the date at the top. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
